Monday 13th to Sunday 19th November 2017

Monday we went to Pama supermarket. For lunch we went to local café for an okay arancino, an okay cheese and ham sandwich and awful lentil soup which was like baby food. They didn’t charge for the arancino because the soup was poor; work that one out if you can. Left over chilli with chips for dinner.

Tuesday the weather was awful. It started with a thunder storm and went downhill from there, raining pretty solidly for several hours. The roads were awash so we had to abandon our plans to visit Valletta. Instead Linda and Mick went to the aquarium and Sam and I stayed in. A tornado hit Mosta, ripping part of the roof off LIDL! In the evening the rain abated and we met up in O’Reilly’s then went on to HOS for dinner. It was all pretty good; a vegetable jalfrezi for S, a Balti for BIL, a somewhat bland chicken rezala for LW and a chicken tikka biryani for me. We went on to Fat Harry’s to watch a typically poor England match – nil, nil against Brazil

Wednesday we went for a walk on Ghardira beach then on to Mellieha, stopping for surprisingly good cakes and cappuccini at the ValYou Café. In the evening I cooked us all pennette amatriciana.

Thursday rain stopped play. We worked and for dinner had frozen pizzas.

Friday we went to Sliema for a walk, stopping off at Georgio’s for coffees. We had planned to move on to walk by the sea at Cashaq but in the event the skies opened so we went to Lidl instead! We also stopped off at Scotts to buy meat for tomorrows curry.

In the evening we met at Miracles then went for dinner at La Sopresa. It was our first visit there, though I can’t explain why. It was cosy and welcoming and the service was friendly and the food excellent. I had a full rack of super-soft ribs, LW had a huge rib eye steak which she declared to be one of the best she has had since coming to Malta, S had a whole pan fried rabbit and BIL had the fixed €14 menu; a prawn cocktail, pork stuffed with Maltese sausage and a slice of ricotta cake. With beers, plenty of wine and water, the bill came to €25 a head, so it was great value too.

Saturday we went to Armier Bay. After coffees at Mambo we went for a short walk around the headland, enjoying the sun after a changeable week. We drove on to The Apple’s Eye where I had the worst bacon and egg toasty on the planet with over-cooked egg and burnt bacon. I still ate it though! For dinner I made an excellent beef vindaloo in our slow cooker.

Sunday we hiked over to Xemxija and had coffees and cakes in Xemxija Café. From there we walked the heritage trail, passing a bunch of mostly French volunteers who were clearing the paths. We walked back to Bugibba and ended up in Zeroundici for lunch. Big mistake! Apart from one other table we were the only diners. Nevertheless it took ages for our drinks to arrive, my toasty didn’t turn up at all (something I was quite glad about in the event) and Linda’s toasty was weird (cheap ham and an omelette filling) and Mick’s wrap was very poor. The owner’s dog was loose in the restaurant and the lady who served us broke off to pick up its poo from between the outside tables. Talk about disgusting! It’s another place to cross off our list.
